Schloss Csákvár

This large former Esterházy mansion is now a lung sanatorium. The first sight is very institutional with extensive car parking in front. Fortunately the long low house is set back behind railings and can still be appreciated as a grand composition, with cour d'honneur, flanking wings and large side courtyards. It was built in 1778-81 for János Esterházy and possibly designed by Jakab Fellner and extended in 1816-23.

On the far side is an extensive park bordered by trees. The garden front has a second giant portico surmounted by a balustrade and paired coat of arms. Though few internal features appear to remain, the whole complex of buildings is reasonably maintained and there are no nasty modern additions intruding on either main front.
